Public Archives are Government records that graduate from the Records Centres because they have enduring value. These are records that have value beyond their original administrative importance to the institutions that created them. As such, they are transferred from the Records Centres into the Public Archives Section
The Public Archives Section is responsible for the systematic appraisal of semi-current records and also the provision of research services to the Government and the general public. Records in the Public Archives are open for public access under prescribed conditions. Those who are interested in conducting research in the public archives are requested to submit a formal application to the Director of Archives for approval

In order to make this collection of public archives more accessible and retrievable, a number of processes are also carried out. As records come out from the Records Centres into the Public Archives, they are sorted, weeded, arranged according to record groups or series and sub-series, listed and described, boxed and shelved

Access to public archives is open to any person of mature age under prescribed conditions. Any person interested to consult these materials is required to submit a formal application to the Deputy Director of Culture (Archival Services) for approval. For more details on this service, please Contact Us

Thereafter finding aids known as INVENTORIES are prepared and put into the Search Room, ready for researchers to consult and make a selection of the files, which they want to use
