National Archives of Malawi

"National Archives of Malawi - The Information Bank for the Nation"

Our Mission

Our Vision

To provide custody and preservation services for the country’s documentary heritage irrespective of the media

Be a leading custodian, preserver and provider of archival information on Malawi for posterity, reference and research

Our Mandate

The mandate of the National Archives of Malawi is derived from two statutory obligations of the Laws of Malawi, viz: the National Archives Act (Chap. 28:01) and the Printed Publications Act (Chap. 19:01).

In order to undertake its functions effectively, the National Archives of Malawi is divided into six operational units. Each of the sections is responsible for specific areas of specialization. At the moment the Units include Records Management, Public Archives, Historical Manuscripts, Legal Deposit Library, Conservation and Reprography, and Administration Services

Within the ambits of its mandate, the National Archives of Malawi acquires a wide range of information resources which are classified, organized, stored and made available to interested parties for their information needs. Since its establishment to-date, the National Archives of Malawi has accumulated an invaluable wealth of information. This information, which is in the form of unpublished and published resources, is an investment for the Government as well as the people of Malawi. If Government officials and the people of Malawi could properly utilize this resource, they would be able to effectively contribute to the development of the country
