Functions of the National Archives of Malawi |

Operation of a nation-wide records management
inspection programme whereby National Archives officials go out into
the field to assess the situation on how records are being managed in
various institutions. In the inspection process records that are of
less value are destroyed according to the standing Records
Retention and Disposal Instructions and those
with enduring value are transferred to the National Archives for
permanent preservation. |

| Provision
of advisory services to Government and private institutions on
sound
and proper records management
practices. This function includes training of records management
personnel, provision
of specialist advice to institutions on the organization of institutional
Records Rooms/ Mini-Archives, and consultancy. |

Provision
of reference services to government
records as well as published information resources, which are deposited in
the National Archives. |
|
|
Provision
of
authorized access to public archives
and historical manuscripts to researchers, scholars and the general
public. |

|
Registration of newspapers and
preservation of printed and
published works on Malawi. Under this function publishers in
Malawi are obliged through the Printed Publications Act (Chap. 19:01)
to deposit a copy of their publications with the National Archives of Malawi. |

|
Promotion
of bibliographic services in Malawi
through the publication of the Malawi National Bibliography and select
bibliographies on issues of national interest. |
|
|
Administration
of the use and application of
the International Standard Book Numbering (ISBN) system in Malawi and
provide advisory service to publishers in the country concerning the
advantages of using ISBNs on their publications. |

|
Document restoration services
through binding, microfilming, fumigation, photo processing, etc. |
